“What
is a Harry?” This is the second question
usually asked by those who interact with us
for the first time. The first is always “Can
I be a Harry?” due to the extremely
good times we Hars have been known to have.
But
in reality, the answer is quite simple. Being
a Harry is about being committed. What makes
this different than any other social group?
Easy! In most social groups the members are
“involved”, but not “committed”.
For example, a breakfast meal consisting of
eggs and bacon is placed in front of you.
The chicken, of course, was “involved”
in the process, but the pig, without question,
was definitely “committed”. It
was obviously much more personal to him.
Being
a Harry is somewhat similar. The commitment
level of the Hars is at near preposterous
levels. As a group, and individually, we are
dedicated to helping the community, charity,
each other, and the collective Harry population
to the point that all other life functions
become secondary to “being a Har”.
The
Hars origin is centered around a handful of
Aston-Beechwood Volunteer Firefighters and
EMTs. It has since grown to include other
emergency services personnel and those in
more typical careers that help others by supporting
various civic and charitable organizations,
such as Cure Autism Now, The American Red
Cross, The Susan G. Korman Foundation, MS
Walks, Alumni Associations, and worthwhile
causes as they arise.
More
importantly, there is a bonding devotion that
cements the Hars. In any time of need, a Harry
will respond with the right tool, a helping
hand, a commitment to baby-sit, an offer to
drive, and even a friendly shoulder to cry
on or a willing ear ready to listen. We don’t
always have the answers, but a Harry will
always be willing to travel with you on your
journey and help you find them. Many of you
have seen the “Footprints” artwork
of a man walking on the beach. Much like that,
when you're a Harry, there are ALWAYS two
sets of footprints in the sand.
All of this being said, the Hars are endeavored
to keep one thing paramount:
Having
a GREAT time wherever we go and creating a
fun atmosphere for others. We’ve been
known to take over bars, islands, and even
entire cruise ships. So if you are up to the
challenge and enjoy making a personal difference
while having the time of your life, become
a Harry. We’ll see you soon! Just follow
the sound of laughter. Slainte'!
